Song on my mind

Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein, Hamesha Yuhin Chalti Rahein
Yeh Hamari Mulakate, Hamesha Yuhin Chalti Raheein
Beete Yuhin Apne Saare Din Raaat
Baaton Se Nikalti Rahe Nayi Baaat
Phir Wahin Baatein Leke Geet Koi Hum Likhe
Jo, Dil Ko, Haan Sab Ke Dil Ko Chu Le
Baatein Suron Mein Yuhin Pighalti Rahein
Baatein Geeton Mein Yuhin Dhalti Rahein
Geeton Mein Haan Humko Khusiyon Se Haan Saja De
Jo Sune Gaaye Woh Hum Se Gaaoon Na
Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein, Hamesha Yuhin Chalti Rahein
Yeh Hamari Mulakate, Hamesha Yuhin Chalti Rahein
Beete Yuhin Apne Saare Din Raaat
Baaton Se Nikalti Rahe Nayi Baaat
Phir Wahin Baathein Leke Geet Koi Hum Likhe
Jo, Dil Ko, Haan Sab Ke Dil Ko Chu Le
Baatein Suron Mein Yuhin Pighalti Rahein
Baatein Geeton Mein Yuhin Dhalti Rahein

Don't know why, But I am not able to get this song from rock on out of my mind. Have been stuck at this for a month now. But I don't bother as it is a lovely song. Amazing work. Sung by Dominique Cerejo

My weekends these days

To see a world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity for an hour.
- William Blake

To feel I have seen the world when I go to nandi Hills on Weekends
And heaven clicking flowers every time
The throttle raising while in my hand
and reaching there in an hour.
- Kim

Murphy's Law at its best

It roughly states "if anything can go wrong, it will".
I see it's true now. In my case it is "If there are many ways of procuring something, the way I choose will always be the wrong one"

I had an option to buy a camera in a shop. But I see its available for cheap somewhere else. I order. I wait. I am still waiting. They have crossed their commitment date many a times now. Every time they don't meet their commitment date, they advance the commitment date to a week later. And when I call them up they shamelessly say, Sir our commitment day is not until next week, So we wouldn't be shipping it until then. After that I remind them that their "commitment date" (whatever it means) was last to last week, they have no answers.
Idiots. Shameless idiots.

No wonder online shopping has not yet caught up in India. Thanks to such "committed" vendors.

Update Finally cancelled my order.

Aravind Adiga wins Man Booker

Well a Mangalore guy wins the Man Booker prize. So what? Every year somebody wins it. This year he happens to be the one. But its still an achievement. A debutant winning Booker is a great deal. He has written a great deal about Mangalore in the TIME magazine.

Gymming again

Bought a pair of wonderful trousers. Actually wanted to buy size 32 ones. But the size was in cms. It said 76 cms. I tried it on, and Surprise surprise, it fitted wonderfully. bought it. After I reached home I realised its size 30. Surprising that size 30 still fits me or surprising that I still fit into size 30 ones. Fallen in love with those trousers. Now my aim is to get into them very easily. Started gymming now. Sitting at my seat with cramps in my tummy after a 2 Hr workout.

planning to go tomorrow again. Lets see how long will I go in this spell.
prevention is better than cure. Need to make my belly f(l)at. Need to make it look like a flat one. It looks like a beer belly, Stop it from being a Pot belly.

All in His name

Peace which was held long is broken. The fundamentalists in the name of religion are vandalising the image of my Mangalore. I am disheartened to see this happening. Not surprised, all religions have their share of fundamentalists, but waging different types of wars while destroying dear life and property...

A trip to Venice

Venice is a beautiful city filled with waterways zig zagging the city lenght wise and breadth wise. And a ride along the river brings out the child in you, the poet in you, the romantic in you, the philosopher in you and many more things.

My fate was a bit different. Started on my bike in Bangalore it self. went all the way to Venice. It all started with a rain at 11. I stopped waiting for it to stop. Finally bored of waiting started at 12:30. All the water logged low-lying areas resembled Venice. It brought out the 'swearer' in me. Finally reached at 1. And looks like Jalahalli cross traffic never allows me to zoom home with out paying its due respect (swears again). After paying my 'respect' to the signal/circle I continued my way home.

If I had waited, I would have reached home after 9AM. it stopped at around 8 :(

Found my way home

Finally found my Kasargod house in google maps. This is quite updated as the building/patch in white/grey is a very recent alteration. And you saw it right. There are no roads leading to this place. Now ask me for directions :)

an embarassing moment

I look at her, She looks at me. We smile. I ask 'you are Rashmi, right?'
All she musters is 'You Nitte, right?' It sounded like you Nitya right?
I: 'nope, I am so and so'
She: 'ya, you Nitya right?'
i; 'Nope, I am so and so'

By now I am very embarassed. then I figure out she asked, was I from Nitte.
I think: Ooofffff.. When is this getting over?

She chats on: 'You were my senior I guess'
I: 'Nope, I was your classmate'
She: 'oh, you know that...'
I: 'I will talk to you sometime later. Bye'

Haa. This is the last time I will try to socialise with any of my college people I find in my office. BTW she joined this Monday.

An equation

A is a close friend of B.
But B is not as close to A as A is to B.
The earlier A realizes this, the easier will A be on Aself
The earlier A realizes this, the less painful will it be.
The earlier A realizes this, the earlier will he find those answers.

A was only a stepping stone
One of the many...

Lonely

Lonely are my days
So are my nights
Lonely are my ways
So are my sights

Lonely I feel all the time
So am I even though i smile
Lonely I feel thr' all my prime
So have I been for a while

Lonely is my life
So is my place
Lonely in my grief
So will it be till I rest in peace.

Books - A man's best friend

"Outside of a dog, a book is Man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx.

What happens when you are given a book (man's best friend) by your best friend?

I was about to cry when you gave it in such a manner. 'This is something you asked for, this is something you did not ask for. And this is your advanced birthday gift. Happy birthday'. You remembered!!

Thanks a lot.

Happy Independence day

The third guy in the first row flinched at the gun shot. He knew it was coming. He knew that it comes this time of the year, for the last three years. Still he flinched. He missed the first note in the national anthem, as always. Lucky him everybody was busy waiting for the national flag to unfurl.

This was scene in my school this year at the independence day flag hoisting. The third guy in the first row used to me back then. As soon as teh guest unfurls the flag they give a 2 gun shot salute. After that we used to play the national anthem. But this year I did not flinch. :)

Met a couple of teachers. For a change somebody called me child. We all were addressed as children. 'come here children, how are you children' etc etc. A break from being called uncle.

Every year independnce day used to be this. Get up early. Go to school in white and white. Fight for the cap with the densest red feathers. A practice run for the march-past. We used to be followed by the scouts, then guides and lastly the NCC. A very beautiful march past from the NCC folks. Good news this time around, 3 guys from our school NCC got selected for the RD parade this year.

A very nostalgic ID i had. Going though the classes. Thats a topic for the next blog.

Continuing with my weekend cooking experiments

What do I do with the 'vermicelli' left in the pack. I have more than half of it left over. And co-incidentally I am hungry enough to finish it. Luckily that is the quickest thing that can be prepared. So I decided to cook again. This time it was 'semige bath'

Now I guess its good time I start my own recipies. Next week I get down into some more deeper water. No readymade ingredients from now on. Not even vermicelli :)

Here is something for the hungry. And a good(read professional) pic as well.

Run. Its a jungle out there

All the practice paid off. I could complete a 5Km marathon , non-stop. I completed the race in 31.37min. good achievemnt for a beginner. A pat on my own back :). Best part, I got a bib with number 100. i will update my position once I get to know it.

In the practice run the winner had achieved 23.28mins. My aim was to complete in 30mins. But narrowly missed the mark. In the qualifying a different winner emerged. He finished the race in 20.20 min. Sadly the old winner could not complete. He retired hurt after experiencing severe cramps in his somach. The last person to qualify finished the race in 24.55min. My weekend running partner narrowly missed being qualified clocking 24.58.

My first lap was completed in 15.45min, and the second one in 15.52. Quite consistent I must say. But I was far away from qualifying. But a good timing to begin. Waiting for the next marathon.

All this is being organised for a marathon to be held at olde Bangalore organised by Runners for life. The event is Urban stampede.

Update: I came 50th. A total of 82 runners completed the run. Thank god, i wasn't last

I feel cheated

I was just wondering what if 1 is not really 1. What if it was a very little smaller than 1. Say 0.999999......9.
Then what I know as 1 is really a bit smaller than 1. Then 1+1 is not actually 2, It would be 1.999999.....8 and 3 would be 2.999999.....7. Which would be the number which would finally be one less than what it is representing. Say 31428571428571428571428571428571 was the number. Then it would be equal to 31428571428571428571428571428570 :(

I feel cheated by these numbers. Thats why I never liked maths. i always knew they were upto something. Not this thing, but something

To test my culinary skills

After a big break I decided to cook again. I started off with vermicelli kheer or 'semige payasa', my favorite. Getting up early was half the effort. I never knew it takes less than 30 mins to make this. The extra ghee that 'fell' from my hands into the bowl made it even better.
Liked it in both flavors. Hot and diluted right after it was ready and cold and thick after it gets cooled down. Today is a gym day after a long time because of this.

When the groves started whispering to me

It would start with collecting cashew-nuts early in the morning. Being there I could never catch sleep. I would be up before 6, a coffee and follow granny to the fields to graze the cattle. We would tie the cattle in the filed and be back. Now I would go roaming to collect cashew nuts from the farm. I liked roaming alone. Not because I liked liked to be left alone, but because I liked to be without supervision. I would feel like a grown up. We had 8 trees in all. I liked the fruit as well. If the fruit was good I would take back fruits also. I liked eating the fruit with salt. The nuts would be put for drying. Granny's farm had two types of fruits, one yellow and the other red. Yellow fruits tasted good, but I liked the red ones because they were rare in our farm and the color was very attractive, though they did not taste as good as the yellow ones.

Then the letter would come, a letter telling I am supposed to come back to B'lore. The last week of May would be for returning to Bangalore, back to school, back to books, and back to everything I disliked. In the last week of May granny would make a fire pit and we would throw cashew-nuts we collected in the two months into the fire. This was followed by the aroma of burning cashew. Granny always knew when to put the fire off, and the right time in which the nuts would be fried. Then we would put sand to douse the fire. This was followed by another batch of nuts, and another, till we were out of cashew nuts.

Then we would take some light weight and crack open the nuts. Some were packed into bottles for me to take it to Bangalore. It was fun having cashew this way. Now a days I go to a shop and buy haldirams salted cashew. But this doesn't taste any good. No where near the cashews I collected and granny burnt for me. My hands used to be very dirty after cracking those nuts due to the oil, but the fun was priceless. The more cashews I collected the more I could get to eat in the end.

A week back when I was traveling in Moodabirdi, the smell of burning cashew brought back these memories. Missing the place where I grew up, missing granny at that place. Now she has shifted to Kasargod town.

PS: Sorry about the subject line. Could not find a better one.

Where were you

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of life and the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun

Withdrawing money??

As usual, as cashless as I can get, I was waiting my turn at the ATM machine. There was not much of a queue. I am the fourth one. One done, Cool just 2 more to go. Another done after what seemed like hours in front of the machine. One of these banks should start ettiwuetes on how to withdraw money from an ATM. Of late I see lot of ppl taking ages to withdraw money. May be there account is so heavy.
Just one more in front of me, All of a sudden he opens up the machine. "hello, there is a better way to withdraw cash from the machine". Then it clicked he had come to tank up the machine.
So much for waiting in the queue. @#@$&

On second thoughts I could have still waited behind him, just in case money drops out :)

Here is Kit for you Kit. He was found outside my cubicle one fine day(night).
You know what to do for the full poster :)

19000 Km in 24 months

I completed 19000 Kms on my bike. Think about it, at an average of 45Km/liter of petrol I have spent 422.22... liters of petrol. At an average of 51 rupees of petrol I have spent Rs21533.3333... no wonder my bank account is empty always. In other words I am bankrupt

Kit - Did i 'overtake' you on my bike yet??

Sweets at my desk

Parihar Sweets,
No 157,
Parihar Chowk,
Aundh,
Pune 411007

Read the address on the bhakarwadi cover. Seeing the address made me so happy. Don't know why, but a sense of belonging came in. I was happy for 2 reasons.
One a total stranger gives me a pack of bhakarwadi, second the more obvious one, BHAKARWADI.

I was breaking my head over some stupid thing in office at night. Was bored to death. Most dependable BB comes to my rescue. I see a post by one claiming to be very happy going to Pune and also willing to help others by taking anything anybody wanted to send to Pune. As usual I reply telling can you get back something, and guess what he agrees to get me sweets from Pune.

I forgot about this for some time now. After almost 2 months I get a 'Hi, I got sweets for you from Pune' in my messenger. I was surprised that person actually got me sweets while I was pulling his legs. A total stranger to me gives me sweets today.
I could not thank him enough. So thought of dedicating this a blog entry to him.
Thanks BNR

A cheesy pickup line

Today I got a cheesy pickup line. Literally.
Have heard of this statement from a lot of celebreties in some talk shows. never new the meaning of one. today I had a personal experience.

i was stuck in the traffic jam on Hosur road. A man (early 30's) comes to me and says "Brother, please drop me till Hosa road junction". Yuck what a line to ask for a drop. I mean a pickup.
His statement was "Brother, nange swalpa Hosa road junction tanka bidi brother"

I am used to this aNNa kind of statements not this brother ones ;)

Flowers flowers everywhere, not a single one to pick

Do not pick read the board at the Lalbagh flower show this year. But after having paid Rs30/- for the entrance (normally Rs7/-) i had to get the worth for it. So here you go.

Flowers and flowers

A great start

I was always fascinated by the photographs taken about water flowers. One example being the .jpg image that comes default with windowsXP in the my pictures folder.
Wanted to try my hand at such pictures. Happy with the outcome. I call it the white lotus.

Nice name

I raised a ticket to get 2 switches patched up for some "silly" work of mine. Got a call on my phone from the support guy named 'John Burns'

John Burns what?

God knows what he was thinking when he saw my surname pop up on his phone. He sure would have had a different spelling for it :(

No Onsite in Sight

Stop giving me stories
bout why i am not sent onsite
I am already in worries
Cos no onsite in sight

Its been more than 3 years
Not gone anywhere onsite
You keep giving me those sneers
Whenever I tell I wanna go onsite

Friends call-in for a treat
As they are again taking the flight
But i sit in office, coding byte by byte
As I been been told, my performance will send me onsite

Wanna see the US
Wanna have beer in Germany
Wanna pee in Paris
But max I have got is Coorg Honey

Wanna make more money
manager says I am being funny
Sadly I dont have a single penny
Not even to have Goa Fenny

Wanna build a house
Atleast buy a 30/40 site
Wanna stay there with my spouse
But now my future doesn't look that bright

I wanna be onsite
So with my boss I fight
he takes it very light
Not knowing my plight

She joined a month back
But today she needs to pack
Cos off to some place
She's ready to race

Contd.....

Point to ponder

What do you call a congenial, captivating, cosmopolitan confluence of software and shopping malls, electronics and environment friendliness, salubrious climate and cleanliness, modern outlook and old worldliness, precision engineering and pubs? You call it India's best city for business. It is also called Bangalore.

Opening lines of Business Today's survey on India's best cities for business, December 1998.
Does Bangalore resemble any of this today?

PS: i call it Bangalore, one of my homes

Marriages made in Heaven???

They say 'marriages are made in heaven'. I dont know how fun they are. But I guess Coorgi marriages are more fun than that. Each step in the wedding is fun for all. The bride, the groom, the family, the guests, everyone has their own share of fun in the wedding. i had the privilage of attending one such wedding yesterday. And needless to say had a very good time at the wedding.

We took the 21:10 BNG MCR bus to Mercara on 22nd night. As not expected we reached madikeri much before 5. We reached our designated accomodation as arranged by our host. Caught up some sleep (not lost sleep, were ready for the wedding and went to 'Cauvery hall' for the ceremony. believe me every thing here is named after Cauvery/Coorg. We saw atleast 10 shops with those names on them. We were briefed by the bride about the various customs. But still were very much fascinated to see those in execution.

I dont know how, but as soon as we entered the premises of the hall, we get a call from the bride to come to her room to see her 'decorated'. She was looking very beautiful, dressed in the traditional Coorgi attire. Traditional Coorgi Attire for women includes wearing a sari ina distinctive fashion with pleats at the back. Traditional attire for men includes wering a wraparound called 'Kupya'.

Many specialities to be noted about the wedding. They dont accept any priests to perform their weedings. it is always the elders who get together to do the wedding. Usage of slokas and vedic chants is also not present. we actually missed when the wedding happened as it happens as soon as the bride and groom enter the wedding mantap. Soon the crowd gathers to wish the couple. Followed by a fight between the girls maternal uncles son fighting with her father in law that I want to marry this girl. i wont let U take her away. This is a part enjoyed by the entire family fighting with the father in-law. A bargain is to be stuck between these 2 before the father in law can actually take the girl. Even we enjoyed this part thoughh we could not understand kodava.

Now is the time for lunch. After lunch is the part where the bride has to go to the wedding mantap from the entrance to the wedding hall from the road with a pot on top of another, a distance of 25 meters. This is the part enjoyed by everyone as they dont allow the girl to reach the wedding mantap by dancing in front of her as she carries 2 pots on her head with water. People of all age enjoy this. Boys, girls, adoloscents both male and female, old people and family and friends every one dances in front of her preventing her from joining her husband on the stage. She took 3.5hrs to complete the distance. this is where liquor flows, unlimited. Everyone is drunk in the first one hour of this dance. This is accompanied by music from the local band set. At one point one of her relatives had taken over the drums.

Overall fun filled day at the wedding. kodavas enjoy their weddings a lot. They dont do it with much pomp, but do with with a lot of glory. Everyone enjoyes it. Wedding starts at 10 in the morning and goes on till 9 in the night, each moment filled with fun. It is one of the fun to be weddings I remember. Actually the best fun filled wedding. Thats why I said Marriages may be made in heaven, but they will be fun if made in Kodagu.

Some photos will follow as a fotoblog.

Love at first sight

I got up today morning without any efforts. That was when I thought there must be something wrong with the day. But little did I know it will turn this beautiful. I came home early to catch up the lost sleep of morning.

I opened the gate expecting nothing. She noticed I had come. She called out to me in her sweet voice. I was stunned to find her there. First time anyone so beautiful had called out to me. Not accustomed to such situations, considering that its the first time, I did not know what to do. I befriended her quite quickly. I fell in love so easliy. I thought of taking her in. A bit nervous, I opened the door to home and took her in.

My folks were surprised at first. Little did they expect me to come hand in hand with her. They asked for details. I explained, how can someone so beautiful be left out to the cruel world. They readily accepted her. This was my first pet. A lovely kitten. A month old.

A neighbour of mine abandoned her in my portico. I had seen him run when he saw me coming. I took her in and served her dinner. Such a playful cat I had not seen before. Am now preparing her bed as she has slept in my lap. I dont want to wake her up, before I make her bed.

Dont have my camera right now and cant upload pics. Will do it as soon as I get my hands on the camera.

Thanks to the computer... It has made me so dumb

I had been out shopping the other day. For a change I had been sent out to get vegetables. I find some fresh coriander leaves and methi. I purchase for a small change. Giving 10Rs I wait for my change. Then suddenly it clicked, I wait for my change, but don't even mentally calculate how much I need to get back. Finally I get the change and leave.

Then I got to thinking. First 12 years of schooling I was taught how to count fast, without the help of a calculator. One year into engineering un-did(This is where i was introduced to Ctrl-Z) all this learning. Thanks to the 'Scientfic calculator' which was mandatory. Am I a "scientist" cos I used it? I better not be. Just one month had ruined my mathematical "skills". I started depending on it heavily for even simple calculations.

Thanks to the PC the trend continued. My Manager was in one of his moods(Very rare) to treat some of us. He asked If i keep an average of 300 per person, how much will it come to for 7 of us? I was amazed at how fast my brain could work. No, not work out the calculation, but open calculator application to calculate the above. I know 3 shortcuts to open calculator in windows.

A learned man once said "PCs make us Possesive"... . I say They made me dumb too...

FotoBlog

Saw a fotoblog of Ashwin the other day. Was very impressed with his photography skills. Wanted to try out how to do that. So just an attempt. My last 3 attempts have left me witha page that has a pic of my album, and a click on that driving you to my Picasa page. Wanted it this way.
lets see if it works

BTW Ashwin sent me a mail telling "....blah blah....link....It is a private blog and hope you enjoy my amateur skills!!" So cannot be posting the link to his photoblog :(
Actually that is where it all started.

Rich tales

you might have observed the big change. No I am not talking about me growing fat (or is it fatter?), or having an hair cut. Its the title.

Finally found a fitting name. What does it mean? Try guessing.
Someone who knows.... Shhhhh!!!! We will keep it that way
